LESSONS FROM MOUNT UHUD

Mount Uhud is one of the most important sites in Islam. It was in the slopes and plains of Uhud where the second battle between Muslim followers and the pagan forces of Makkah transpired on March 19, 625 AD (3 Shawwal 3 AH in the Islamic calendar). Fresh from an earlier victory in the Battle of Badr, the Muslims were close to winning again in Uhud but a group of archers, thinking that the the fight was over, disobeyed the instruction of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and abandoned their posts to collect spoils, allowing a surprise attack by the pagan forces on their flanks. For devout Muslims, the event is a reminder of the dire consequences of disobeying the Prophet’s instructions.
